Rockstar Games' new title, 'GTA 6', has taken over the online video streaming platform (OTT) Netflix. An unprecedented situation has unfolded where simple gameplay footage has climbed to the top of global movie rankings.
According to FlixPatrol data on the 29th, the video titled 'Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look', released on Netflix, claimed the number one spot in the movie category across roughly 80 countries worldwide. Netflix traffic surged explosively immediately following the video's release. According to Sensor Tower data, during the release time slot of the video, U.S. Netflix mobile users spiked by 50% and web users by 125% compared to the average of the previous 12 Thursdays.
The video was pre-released exclusively on Netflix for 6 hours starting at 9 PM (Eastern Time) on the 27th before being uploaded to the official YouTube channel. Running for 27 minutes, it captured the journey and action of the two protagonists (Jason and Lucia) set in Vice City, captured on a PlayStation 5 (PS5) environment. Foreign media outlets have analyzed that Netflix likely paid Take-Two $100 million to secure these 6 hours of exclusivity.
The combination of Netflix, which boasts 325 million subscribers worldwide, and the GTA series, which has sold over 400 million copies, has shattered traditional game show-centric marketing formulas. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, stated, "Rockstar likely felt that releasing this trailer via Netflix was a wonderful way to showcase it. I think this is an example of Rockstar trying something new and marketing a title, and I hope there's more to come." GTA 6 is scheduled for official release on November 19 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
