U.S. President Donald Trump has declared the resumption of maritime blockade measures against Iran, announcing that 20% of the value of commercial cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz will be forcibly collected under the guise of "security costs."
On the 13th (local time), President Trump stated this via his social media platform 'Truth Social', declaring, "We are reinstating the 'IRANIAN BLOCKADE' measures." He explained that the measure "strictly blocks the entry and exit of Iranian vessels and Iranian-affiliated clients," while other nations will be permitted fair and free use of the strait.
President Trump further emphasized that the United States will act as the 'Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz' moving forward. He added, "To cover the costs required to provide security in the world's most volatile region, we will receive compensation equal to 20% of the value of all cargo transported," and announced that the establishment of a related collection system would begin immediately.
This measure is interpreted as a powerful additional sanction aimed at fundamentally controlling Iran's external trade, including crude oil exports, beyond merely striking military facilities. It comes as a show of force continues despite U.S. airstrikes launched in response to recent Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
