- Heatwave advisory issued for Seoul effective 11 a.m. on the 23rd… Most of the country under heatwave warning influence
- Daytime highs soar to 32–35 degrees Celsius… Steaming heat expected to continue for a while with warnings likely to expand
- Showers in places like Gyeonggi, Chungnam, and Jeju starting from the afternoon… Humidity rises after rain stops, pushing discomfort index to its peak
The entire country is boiling. The Korea Meteorological Administration issued a heatwave advisory across all of Seoul, effective at 11 a.m. on the 23rd. Most parts of the country, including the greater Seoul area, southern Gangwon, the Chungcheong regions, southern provinces, and Jeju Island, are also under the influence of heatwave warnings.
Today's daytime high temperatures are projected to soar between 32 and 35 degrees Celsius. Seoul's daytime temperature is also expected to exceed 33 degrees. A heatwave advisory is issued when hot weather with a maximum perceived temperature exceeding 33 degrees continues for two or more days, or when severe heat-related damage is anticipated. The Korea Meteorological Administration has left open the possibility that the areas under advisories will expand further as the upward trend in temperatures shows no sign of abating for the time being.
From the afternoon, showers are expected to pour in various places due to atmospheric instability. Expected areas include southern and northeastern Gyeonggi, inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon, Chungnam, western Jeonbuk, western inland Gyeongnam, as well as Jeju Island. Light raindrops of less than 0.1 mm that fell in the greater Seoul area and the central and northern inland areas of Gangwon in the morning are gradually subsiding.
While the heat temporarily cools down during the showers, the real problem comes after the rain stops. As temperatures rise again amidst the humidity elevated by the rain, the sticky, sauna-like heat felt by citizens will become even more severe.
